SHELBY – Golfers may have waited an extra day to wrap up the Class B state invitational, but it seemed the individual title races were already clinched on Tuesday.

Libby’s Ryggs Johnston and Missoula Loyola’s Kylie Esh led wire-to-wire and each captured titles on Thursday at Marias Valley Golf Course. It was the second straight title for Johnston, who broke his own scoring record.

“I was trying to get it to twenty under par,” said Johnston smiling. “But I struggled just a little bit today. I was kind of hitting the ball all over the place but I got a 67 out of it, so that’s alright.”

The Loggers’ sophomore sensation finished Tuesday’s round with a blistering 61, including an outstanding 29 on the front nine, giving him an eight-stroke lead heading into the final 18 holes. The Arizona State commit had no problem waiting an extra day to conclude his second state tournament, tallying a 67 to finish the 36-hole tournament at 128. The score broke the all-class record of 131 he set just last season.

Johnston finished his sophomore campaign with an undefeated mark, after winning each tournament he entered.

“You just got to focus on playing your best,” he said. “I just try not to focus on ‘hey, you’re supposed to win’. I just try to play my game and what happens, happens”

Missoula Loyola’s Bucky Crippen took advantage of the back nine, scoring 35 to edge past Huntley Project’s Colton Hudson. Crippen’s 142 was a single stroke better than the Red Devil, who entered the round in second place.

Missoula Loyola held off Townsend by three strokes for the first-place team trophy, 642 to 645. Crippen was joined by teammate Thomas Sellman in the top 10. Scott DeMars of Townsend finished sixth.

Esh was arguably as impressive as Johnston during the tournament. The Missoula Loyola junior held a 13-stroke lead entering the day and finished with the same margin after posting a round of 76 and two-day total of 146.

“My putting wasn’t the greatest today so it was nice to have that cushion,” she said. “It was also nice playing with one of my teammates (Katie Fagg). She picked me up a lot.”

Esh moved back to Montana last summer and never lost a tournament over the course of the spring schedule. This week wasn’t the first time she stepped foot onto the greens of Marias Valley Golf Course – her father, Joey, spent time as the course’s head golf pro. Esh committed to the Montana Grizzlies’ golf program earlier this year.

“(My dad) told me to stay patient with the wind,” Esh said. “And also the greens slope to the front so he told me to stay short of the hole. And that definitely helped.”

Thursday also marked a milestone for the Missoula Loyola team, which finished one-two at every tournament throughout the spring. Katie Fagg edged hometown product Skyler Martin of Shelby by a single stroke for the runner-up honor.

The Three Forks girls captured the team title, running away from second-place Shelby by 27 strokes. Sydney Rochford and Shainy Mack finished fifth and sixth, respectively, for the Lady Wolves.
