BOZEMAN – A couple of Montana State football players are getting their chance at the next level. Chad Newell, the Bobcats’ tough-nosed running back out of Billings, has been invited to the rookie mini-camp with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Newell, who has been working out daily at Dane Fletcher’s gym, “The Pitt” in Bozeman, impressed several scouts with his toughness, and may get a shot just because of his ability to play special teams. And, because of his strength and blocking ability, the 220-pound Newell may even get to try to make it as a tight end.

Late Monday afternoon, John Walker, the MSU cornerback who had some struggles during his Pro Day, got an invite to the San Francisco 49ers’ rookie mini-camp. He’ll join teammate JP Flynn at the camp.

Walker, the Washington D.C. native, is only 5-foot-9 and 180 pounds, so is going to have to prove himself in the mini-camp before he gets an invite to training camp.
