BILLINGS – Fairfield claimed the State B crown with an upset 34-33 win over Malta on Saturday. Malta had claimed that title the previous two years.
“We came in, I felt like we were getting good stuff, we just needed to finish. I challenged them and said it’s not about Xs and Os right now, we’ve got to go finish. We went on that little run and got the score tied. Turned into a ball game again and then it was a defensive battle on both ends. We had some uncharacteristic turnovers and they took forced shots. We held them to one and done and then it turned into a one-point dramafest at the end. I don’t think I can explain it,” said head coach Dustin Gordon.
The Eagles took the lead late in the game on a 3-point shot by Allix Goldhahn.
“I’m so excited, I’m shocked. With 1.1 seconds going off you look up at the clock and you’re like, we just won a state championship. I’m in awe,” said Goldhahn.
Down goes the champ, now Fairfield again reigns supreme in Class B.
