SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Jill Barta and Elle Tinkle were among four Gonzaga players named to the 2017 all-West Coast Conference teams, the league announced Tuesday.
Barta, a former Fairfield High School star, was selected to the first team along with teammate Kiara Kudron.
Tinkle, who played at Missoula Big Sky High School, was a second-team selection. Laura Stockton was an honorable mention choice.
Coach Lisa Fortier was also named the conference coach of the year.
Barta, just a redshirt sophomore, is on the all-conference first team for the second time, becoming just the third Gonzaga women’s basketball player, along with Heather Bowman and Courtney Vandersloot, to accomplish the feat in both of her first two seasons with the program. Barta averaged 15.7 points per game against conference opponents, which ranked fourth in the league. She shot 41.8 percent from the field and better than 85 percent from the foul line, and averaged 5.7 rebounds per game. She scored in double figures in 14 of 18 conference games and led the Bulldogs in scoring 11 times, winning WCC player of the week honors twice.
Tinkle, who was a 2015 first-team selection, returned from injury this season. She averaged 8.3 points, 5.9 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game, which ranked fifth in the league. She also finished fifth in the WCC with 1.1 blocked shots per game. Tinkle, a senior, now has 181 career steals, which is eighth-most all-time in program history. She’s played in 139 career games at Gonzaga, the most all-time, and has been on the winning side 110 times, just two short of the all-time mark.
The Bulldogs, who won the West Coast Conference regular-season title, head to the conference tournament in Las Vegas this week.
