HELENA – Free throws are supposed to be the simplest shot in basketball.
Kalispell Flathead certainly took advantage from the charity stripe on Friday night, sinking seven of eight in the fourth quarter to edge Helena Capital 50-44 in each team’s conference opener.
Eric Seaman made nine free throws and scored a team-high 14 points for the Braves. Sam Elliott added 10 points while Tyler Johnson and Wyatt Potter each had eight in the win.
The Braves move to 1-0 in the Western AA.
Bradley Haller and Willie Gross had 23 combined points for Helena Capital (0-1), which trailed 26-17 at halftime.
The Bruins outscored the Braves 17-11 in the third quarter and pulled to within a point, but free throws sealed the win for Flathead.
The Braves travel to Helena High on Saturday while the Bruins host Kalispell Glacier in The Den.
