LOS ANGELES – Montana natives Elle Tinkle and Jill Barta were named to the preseason all-West Coast Conference women’s basketball team, the league announced Monday.
Tinkle, who played high school basketball at Missoula Big Sky, and Barta, who played at Fairfield, will help lead Gonzaga into another season of high expectations. The Bulldogs, who have won 11 of the past 12 regular-season WCC titles, were picked to again win the conference in the preseason polls.
It’s the second consecutive preseason Tinkle has been recognized with a preseason all-conference selection. She was an all-conference first-team selection in 2015 after averaging 14.9 points per game during conference play while shooting 50.6 percent from the field and 43.8 percent from 3-point range. She only played in 10 games last year before suffering a season-ending injury.
Barta was a 2016 first-team all-WCC selection, as well as a WCC all-freshman team selection. She averaged 14 points and 5.8 rebounds per game last season. Barta scored 463 points and grabbed 190 rebounds in her freshman season, both totals ranking second in Gonzaga’s freshmen history.
Gonzaga edged BYU by one point for the No. 1 ranking in the preseason poll.
