HELENA – Missoula Hellgate took advantage of a Sam Carnes goal in the final 10 minutes as the Knights edged Helena High 1-0 in Western AA boys soccer on Wednesday.

Josh Noem and Justin Lane each played great in goal, but Carnes’ go-ahead would wind up the game-winner between the Knights and Bengals. The keepers combined for 17 saves.

The win boosts Missoula Hellgate, the defending Class AA champion, to 8-1-2 on the season. The Knights, along with Kalispell Glacier, clinch the top two spots in the Western AA conference and earn automatic trips to the state tournament in Kalispell. Hellgate wraps up the season Saturday against Helena Capital.

Helena High (5-4-2) maintains a two-point lead over Kalispell Flathead for third place in the west. The Braves face rival Glacier on Thursday and would surpass the Bengals with a win.
