For the first time ever, it looks like Class AA basketball teams will start playing divisional tournaments — not this coming season — but starting in 2017. That’s according to School District 2 activities director Mark Wahl in Billings.

It’s pending approval from the Montana High School Association in September. But that only seems to be a formality — after AA principals Tuesday voted in favor of it. The East and West would hold divisional tournaments at separate sites, with girls games at one location and boys games at another. Thursday and Friday games would be scheduled for 5 p.m. to limit the amount of school kids would miss.

The boys and girls would convene at one location for the championship games on Saturday. However, with the new format, regular-season games will be trimmed from 20 games to 18.
